What Is Allied Health

Allied health professionals are the prime movers of healthcare… providing patient care, diagnostics, treatments, and administrative support – in virtually every healthcare setting.

Modern US healthcare would not exist without allied healthcare professionals.

Allied healthcare professionals include:

  • Medical Assistants
  • Patient Care Technicians
  • Dental Assistants
  • Surgical Assistants, Surgical Technicians, and Sterile Prep Technicians
  • Medical Technologists / Clinical Laboratory Scientists
  • Phlebotomists
  • EKG/ECG Technicians
  • Radiology Technicians
  • Dieticians and Nutritionists
  • Physical Therapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Medical Billing and Coding Specialists
  • Medical Administrative Specialists
  • Medical Information Technologists
  • Pharmacy Technicians
  • Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics

… just to name a few.

A career in allied healthcare is rewarding, and the options and opportunities are diverse.

Types of Allied Health Training

Training programs and schools for allied healthcare careers can be divided into two basic types:

  • Academic / Degree-Based
  • Career-Based

There are advantages and disadvantages to both types.

Academic, or degree-based, programs are those offered by traditional colleges and universities.  At the end of a (typically) 2- or 4-year enrollment, you receive an Associate or Bachelor degree; and, in addition to training specific to your career path, you should have received a general, liberal arts college education.  The average cost of a 4-year college education in the United States is $80,000 to $140,000.

Career-based programs are those offered by career-focused schools and training programs.  These programs generally provide a certificate instead of a degree, and the training is focused exclusively on your career path – without extraneous courses.  Because of this, these programs typically range from only 3 to 24 months.  Additionally, the tuition is typically MUCH less than that of a traditional college.

DRN Education provides career-based allied health training programs…
Getting you to your career quicker and with less educational expense.

Considerations for IMGs…

Training and/or certification in a US allied healthcare field may make it easier for international medical graduates to secure interactive US Clinical Experience rotations.

It may also serve as an alternative pathway to practicing in healthcare in the United States and/or provide an interim means of providing financial support for you and your family while working towards residency.
